- Remove dangerous items
Before getting a cat/kitten, you MUST remove any dangerous objects and chemicals. You need to know that cats are very curious creatures that like to explore. Anything that could harm them needs to be hidden in a place that they cannot get to (a secure and locked cabinet for example). You should also know that lots of things are toxic to cats. You can find this in What is toxic to my cat?
- Food and treats best for cats and kittens
It may be obvious, but food is an important part of your cat’s/kitten’s daily life. Although, you can’t just buy them anything. Kittens eat different foods to grown cats. If they eat the wrong stuff, they could become ill. You need to buy food depending on their age, size, weight, breed, activity levels, whether they have been sterilised or not, and illness (if they have any). If you need more information, it is best to ask your local vet for more advice.
- A safe environment for your kitty
A safe and comfortable environment is a must. If your kitty doesn’t feel safe and trust you, they will hide from you, they might become aggressive and territorial, or they might try to escape. To ensure a safe environment, provide food, fresh water, litter trays in multiple areas, scratching posts, toys, and resting or sleeping areas. Most importantly, provide positive and consistent human interaction, provide opportunities for play and predatory behaviour.
- A warm bed
Cat’s, like most humans, prefer to have a warm bed. If you don’t want them sleeping on top of you (see Why does my cat sleep on top of me?) multiple cat beds are the best solution. If you have more than one cat, this is great because it stops them from fighting over who sleeps in the bed. Why do cats sleep so much? It is to conserve their energy for the hunt. Although domestic cats don’t need to hunt, they have still adapted these traits to this day.
